The good news is that your Gold, pies, manager upgrades and cards will be carried over to the next town. This means that you will have to start from the beginning. You can also upgrade each of them using coins which increases the capacity, production of coins per second, speed and more. So the cycle goes like this: Shops->Trading Post->River Boat->Coins->Shops and so on.
The River Boat will then collect these resources and sell it at the market for coins. This will collect all the resources that are placed outside from all shops which will then placed at the River Boat.
These shops will produce their own resources (Tap the icon above the shop) and place them outside. The first is the shops (General Store, Tailor Shop, Fur Shop, etc) which you will have to build.
